This wonderful piece has a striking presence, the character and emotion that emanates from this individual is highly arresting. With gnarled features, he is shown staring beyond the viewer, as if lost in thought, depicted wearing a long beard, with his wavy hair tied into an elaborate knot above the head. The mouth is downturned in austere fashion, reflecting a life spent in deep contemplation.

The figure depicted here is a Brahman, the priestly caste into which one could not enter without having been born into it. After his years as a novice, a Brahman could either decide to live in the world, filling a secular position, or he could continue life as a religious leader, acting as an intermediary between the gods and mankind. One the other hand, he might decide to renounce the world and live as a hermit, spending the remainder of his days in an isolated hut in the forest, his days spent in study and deep contemplation. Gandharan artists were particularly skilled at reflecting the sombre, wild nature of these enigmatic individuals, as is evidenced in this stunning piece.

Each piece you see here is made individually by our master artisans. The craftsmanship involved creates slight variations in color, finish, size, and shape - a quality we consider to be an added touch of uniqueness. The remarkable detail of our stone sculptures is due to meticulous and labor-intensive care by our craftsmen to produce these unique sculptures of exquisite detail and timeless durability.

About Stone:  The stone used for our sculptures is the grey Udai stone which is a solid stone that is perfect for any type of location and weather conditions, hot or cold, wet or dry. The stone is versatile in that it can be colored in a wide spectrum of colors.  It can also be polished or unpolished giving it a clean or rough feel.  In humid conditions if it is left untouched it takes on a very mysterious, antique, worn look like you would see in the temple ruins of India.
